Japanese Cute Culture
Why do grown women dress and act like little girls?
Feminism in Japan
So, if Hello Kitty has been the cultural icon in Japan, what does the introduction of Aggretsuko say about women in Japan today? Japan is an especially tough world for ladies. It is an even more male-dominated society than exists in the rest of the world. Women make 30% less than their male peers, compared to 20% less in the US. Almost 60% of them are leaving the workforce after they have their first child. Yet, there are some signs of change. The prime minister of Japan has made “womenomics” a priority, although necessarily because he’s a good guy. Goldman Sachs published a report in 1999 finding that Japan’s GDP could be increased by 15% if women were integrated into the workforce. Considering that Japan’s economy has been floundering for decades and the population could shrink by 25% over the next three decades, he’s got to do something.
